چکیده

In this paper a marker-controlled and regularized watershed segmentation is proposed. Only a few previous studies address the task of regularizing the obtained watershed lines from the traditional markercontrolled watershed segmentation. In the present formulation, the topographical distance function is applied in a level set formulation to perform the segmentation, and the regularization is easily accomplished by regularizing the level set functions. Based on the well-known Four-Color theorem, a mathematical model is developed for the proposed ideas. With this model, it is possible to segment any 2D image with arbitrary number of phases with as few as one or two level set functions. The algorithm has been tested on real 2D fluorescence microscopy images displaying rat cancer cells, and the algorithm has also been compared to a standard watershed segmentation as it is implemented in MATLAB. For a fixed set of markers and a fixed set of challenging images, the comparison of these two methods shows that the present level set formulation performs better than a standard watershed segmentation.

A Comparative Study between Level Set and Watershed Image Segmentation for Tracking Stem Cells in Time-Lapse Microscopy

This paper evaluates the performance of two methods, level set active contours and watershed region growing, applied to live cell image segmentation. These methods suffer from opposite problems. As the level set method tends to merge clustered cells, the watershed method often results in oversegmentation. These problems can be reduced by adding an image pre-processing step, consisting of multi-...

Partial Differential Equations applied to Medical Image ‎Segmentation

‎This paper presents an application of partial differential equations(PDEs) for the segmentation of abdominal and thoracic aortic in CTA datasets. An important challenge in reliably detecting aortic is the need to overcome problems associated with intensity inhomogeneities. Level sets are part of an important class of methods that utilize partial differential equations (PDEs) and have been exte...

An Improved Approach for Breast Cancer Detection in Mammogram based on Watershed Segmentation

An accurate technique for breast tumor segmentation is a critical step for monitoring and quantifying breast cancer. The fully automated tumor segmentation in mammograms presents many challenges related to characteristics of an image. In this paper, a hybrid segmentation algorithm, which combines the watershed transform and level set techniques, is proposed. Since watershed segmentation is base...

A Novel Spot-Enhancement Anisotropic Diffusion Method for the Improvement of Segmentation in Two-dimensional Gel Electrophoresis Images, Based on the Watershed Transform Algorithm

Introduction Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DGE) is a powerful technique in proteomics for protein separation. In this technique, spot segmentation is an essential stage, which can be challenging due to problems such as overlapping spots, streaks, artifacts and noise. Watershed transform is one of the common methods for image segmentation. Nevertheless, in 2DGE image segmentation, the no...
